Welcome to 2018-2019

Welcome Parents and Students to the 2018-2019 school year!!

Welcome back from the beautiful summer and into another exciting school year!  I hope everyone was able to get some rest and is geared up for the school year ahead.  I’m Mrs. Lehto and I will be teaching your child Computer Applications, Introduction to Business, or Personal Finance this year.

I wanted to write this letter to introduce myself and to let you all know about my classroom expectations and supply needs.  I have lived in Escanaba almost my whole life, with the exception of my time in the Navy and my first year of teaching which was in Lena, WI.  My husband Tim and I have four children, which all attend Escanaba Public Schools.  I spent twelve
years teaching at North Central Area Schools before coming to Escanaba High School.  I am very happy to be teaching at my Alma Mater and feel very lucky to be a part of such a great staff, students and school!

I do have supply needs for students.  I feel it is important for students to be organized so I request that they have a 1” three ring binder and index tabs for organization.  Also, of course a blue/black pen and a pencil. A pack of index cards is optional but they are allowed to use one notecard per chapter on all tests.  A pen drive is optional.  I feel these supplies are important for a few reasons.  First, being organized allows students to stay more focused and helps them study more efficiently.  Second, having all of their work in their binder allows them to look back and see the improvements they have made throughout the year.  Next, if students ever question their grades or missing assignments, the proof will be right there for them.  Finally, on some of my tests, I will allow them to use whatever material they have in their binder.  These binders are also checked periodically for a grade. I also have a staff blog for students and parents to let them know what will be happening in class that week.  Therefore, if they are absent from school, they will know what they missed.  I feel it is important for students to be accountable for their grades.  I always tell students, I don’t give you your grade, you earn it!  If there is a problem getting supplies, please contact me.  I do have limited extra supplies for students.

I am a firm believer that all students can learn, and I believe in setting high expectations for students and expect them to rise to the expectations!  Every student is capable of learning and I want all of them to know that I am there to help.  Communication is a very important tool used in my classroom. I hope your child will feel comfortable knowing that I will do whatever I can to help them achieve success!  With that said, I also want you, the parents, to know that I am open to communication.  I will always answer emails, and will return phone calls.  My email and phone number are at the bottom of the letter.  Please feel free to contact me about any concerns!

P.S.  If your student is in a business class, they have an opportunity to be part of Business Professionals of America!  If you are interested, please let me know!
